Rangely Col to Flaming Gorge UT 1Utah » Vernal

40North of Vernal, UT is Flaming Gorge resevoir / nat rec area. This is into the 3rd leg of this journey and finally getting to USA mid lattitude... now headed up into high plains and start going through the Uinta mtn range .
After going down to the store in
Rangely, Colorado this morning & whittling some w/ the guys headed out hwy 64w to Vernal, Utah. Cross into Utah; yea! Utah is one of my favorite places / states because you can see the geology so clear. You know there are fossils bewteen the strata just waiting to be cracked open and found. This is the Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway. Dry, arid, high plains has preserved dinosaur fossil sites all through here.
Left the oil and natural gas fields & Freemont Man of Rangely behind & got on hwy 191 N at Vernal.
Drive was immediatly scenic beautiful / Utah beautiful western high plains mesa.
Distinct red soil & strata lines layers. North of Vernal to Red fleet st pk & passed for better
fishing. Looked red surrounding lake like Lake Powell. Climbing ascending up to
8,450' pass -- mt Lena 9,755' elev-- & in clouds & some snowpack. Clouds and fog visability 100 yds at times.
Break out of clouds on descent & down 15 miles to Flaming Gorge resevior and dam. Flaming gorge reservoir about 40 miles north to south... IS the green river dammed up. And it IS GREEN... ?the moss in this cold water makes it green??? had to wade in Green
river... never pass up a river / stream that you don't take 10 mins to wade in.
COLD water. 5 miles out to Dutch John. 3 mi to Dripping Springs camp 8.50 fee . 3 mi
down road tommorrow & will trout fish in Green river.
Overcast. rain. 46* dreary from front moving thru last night. rain on roof
sounded good . went into Rangely to the coffee shop & whittle w/ the guys.
Q?What do you guys do here in Rangely? Henry at the "Buck & Bull" says
"mostly leave".
