Hygiene 2

ITW 69

Thursday July 8, 2010 38* am

East fork of Hyalite Creek, Hyalite Lake Montana

Talked about on the road hygine. next lesson.

River Bath. / creek bath.

These mountain streams are beautiful in these natnl campgrounds.. most have some running water at some place.. usually no showers / bathhouse. just latrine / head.

Creek Bath
Take igloo cooler out to backyard. fill 1/2 w/ water. Add 2 big 10 lb bags of ice. Now stand in the cooler and take bath w/ washcloth. If you are in a camp that just has a water pump... fill a boiler pot & bathe. Often just a cold water spigot... go outside and bath when it's 42* w/ wind 10 to 15, and shave. The wind on the High Plains and Prarie often blow at 20+ and will drive you crazy from the never ending, relentless blowing. I talk about the good feel of Journeying w/ the wind on my face... there is a downside fatiguing of contsant wind gusts to 30 and 40mph.

Often the Elev is 6,000 to 8,000' up in the mountains or high plains. These streams are melted snowpack. Liquid ice... i know the temp is 33-34*. you definatly feel refreshed after a river bath.

Feet are still dry / skin cracking from low / no humidity... so use vicks salve under socks for dry cracking skin on heels/ feet.

**** something must be working. -20+? had a leather belt & it went down 3 notches... shorts were still about to fall down . Put it in the bag & am wearing a Marine corps belt that cinches up.

****

& have moved to neosporin to combat dry skin cracking on feet. NO humidity here & feels great but drys you out. Some teeth ache from "dry socket" ... little to no saliva because of 12% humidity. Some physical things like this to contend w/ but is far outweighed by better emotional health by hiking to some good views.
