Friday June 11, 2010

Grand Junction / Fruita , Colorado to Rangely, Colorado

Hwy 139 N to Rangely

The question was asked ?is this your bucket list?

No

, but there are a lot of
places I still want to see & learn about the history & cultures that lived there
& geology & raw materials resources that developed there. & was also asked about
a vacation. This is not really a vacation. This is a journey of sorts. ...maybe some of
both... had some revelations about doing this now as at this age, it may not be
possible in a few more years... & I said don't wait; go now. Things may change for the worse and this chance may not come up
again... don't put this off. Go while I can. ... & don't wait. Carpe diem.

I've traveled all my life and enjoyed seeing the world. This is an extended journey of gone several months. Leaving early May; Back in September.

So this is part
of an odyssey to see some of the world / America / the West... some places you may
recognize... many back roads that are mostly untraveled. 50 other cars on road
today. 100 locals... but few traveling this route.

Today from Fruita / Grand Junction Colo N on Hwy 139 Dinosaur Diamond Scenic
Byway was a spectacular drive.... going from Colorado Mesa country to geologic
change of high desert plateau inside of 30 miles.

Went thru the only / few East to
West mountain chain in the world. ... crested Douglas pass at 8, 268' w/ driving among clouds / fog w/ visability of 150'. Drove
switchback road on a valley known for the Freemont Culture that left
petrographs= eched into rock , and pictographs = drawn/ painted onto canyon
walls...10,000 years ago, ... that eventually were inhabited & claimed by the Ute
and Shoshone tribes... to arrive in Rangely, CO pop 2,300 .

Went from 97
yesterday to 67 now at dusk wind 20 gusts to 30. overcast & rain is coming. This
is a staging point going north. Supplies today in Grand junction / Fruita ... just
like the wagon trains.. 'cause don't know when we'll be in a big town for a
while... got to go.
