ITW 87 Glacier Nat Pk ... Positioning to drive "Going- to - the -Sun -Road"
from East to West.
July 24 2010 Coram MT / Hungry Horse, MT to East Glacier, MT / St. Marys, MT
Driving the Southern " U " loop -- HWY 2 E-- around under Glacier np was a unique treat. Marias Pass 5,216' is lowest continental divide point in MT. Most of the journey for the last couple months has been above 6,000' to 8,000'. Sometimes up to 10,000' . beautiful drive today.
Glacier pk hotel... the one on the travel channel is just as opulent as you think. neat old Rockies forest hotel for the gateway to Glacier when the northern pacific opened up glacier to tourism. Was there after poking around the train station taking pics... it's also that unique rustic period building.
While there met 2 guys and spent a while talking w/ them. Talked as friends passing... veterans / warriors... the Marine cap drew them in to open up w/ me. We spoke quickly as brothers... serious brothers. The 2 Blackfeet guys I refer to as "Red and Al" were as unique , proud, and as honorable men as I've ever known. Genuine. The Real thing.. and I'm glad to call them my buddies now even though I'll probably never see them again.
Sometimes ,... at the time, you don't know why paths cross the way they do. ?For what reason was I supposed to talk w/ Red and AL? ?What is it I was supposed to Learn here today? Crossing paths for that brief few mins brought me to hear their wisdom, their experience, their metel, and allowed me to respect men that was as I've put it before... have walked 40 miles of hard road. Kindred spirits. We parted as true brothers on separate journeys; i am richer for the time spent w/ Red & Al.
Although it was brief by time measure; we covered a lifetime of journey in about 15 minutes. Accidental meeting... maybe not; i learned a lot from them.
I saw the police cars and ambulance go speeding by while talking. ... in less that 2 miles... drove past the accident of what was a fatal tragedy. the 2nd tragedy in 20 minutes I witnessed.
on up the road the lake at Two Medicine was as pristine a glacial lake sight as can be imagined. Wound up the eve at St. Marys late & stayed at a less than favorable place... at 2 am right down the hill below... 500 yards... another auto fatality.
Family & friends know I still don't handle tragic death well. One of the benefits of these majestic places seen was a chance to offer up a prayer for family & friends Sons lost. Still puzzled about the thread of death weaving through the day so close to me. have not thought out & sorted out yet... just know it was a good day to see some great things... & a Sad Heart for the close by tragedies.
Keep saying your prayers for my safe travel & return.
Sometimes i wonder if I ever will see home / friends again. ... And accept that , that may be the past.
?Is my journey here supposed to finish out here on the edge?
Sometimes I think there is No Direction Home. .... and that's ok too.
You never drink twice from the same stream.
