July 1 Chippy camp Box Canyon MT
Rain all night. sounded good. camped 30' away from the river. Boulder River up from snowpack melt / runoff, crested. Some towering cumulus clouds this morning... must be tops to 40k, 'cause it hailed Quarter sized Hail for a few minutes. On the edge of the cloud / air shaft collumn so no Hail damage.
Onto end
of canyon. really rough dirt road in places. Spectacular canyon. huge trees. Burch stands,
ponderosa / lodgepole pines, blue spruce 100+' tall. Cottonwood flakes in air.
Boulder River is 4 to 5 ' from road sometimes . past hells canyon. All dirt road in here. Some is 4WD terrain. a really shaky ride to the
end... Road so rough at times it's 5mph. 10mph feels like cruising on interstate. Running faster would have possibly damaged the shocks / chassis suspension. Slow was good to really see the canyon / Montana pristene back wilderness Box canyon road 6,650'. Mount Hawley 10,000' .
48 miles in to the end of the Canyon. 4wd from here to
ghost mining town of Independence MT circa 1885 when ore ran out.
4 hrs drive in
today on rough road for the last 15 miles of Box Canyon but was worth it to be in Montana wilderness & see the real thing .
on way back stopped at
glacier pool lake & fished for a while as the river was up and very fast flowing. Caught 1st cutthroat trout. is pink like salmon... good
supper.
River bath / wash tonight. Wade into a small eddy & clean up. Melted snow is headwaters of Boulder river.
You haven't lived
'til you wash in a creek bath/ & do a snowmelt bath w/ liquid ice / melted snow. Pure clean water. Gets your blood flowing quickly. Wow!
