Sinks Canyon st pk Lander, Wyoming

ITW 40

Wendsday June 16, 2010

Arrive Sinks Canyon Lander, Wyoming late afternoon

Windy and gusts 30+ all day, through some rain and bad overcast but finaly get to Lander, Wyoming 5,357'elev... a neat town and will see tommorrow. Out hwy 131 8 miles to Sinks Canyon st pk.

Sinks Canyon is the middle fork of the POPO Agie (Po-Po- Shuh) river that flows down the Wind River mountains. Half way down the canyon,... the river "Sinks"... goes underground and 1/4 mile down further down the canyon, re-emerges in "The Rise". (see tommorows post -when done- for pics and story)

POPO Agie river at the campsite will flow to the gulf on this side of the Continental Divide... flow into the Wind River, into the Bighorn River, Yellowstone River, Missouri River,... to the Mississippii & out to the gulf. These mountain streams are melted snowpack and all are clear... you can see the rocks on the bottom clear at 4 feet... at 14 feet.... you can see the trout in the streams most of the time.

It's stormy, cold, rainy, windy... really cruddy late afternoon. On the north side / upper end of Sinks Canyon st pk,... there is a National park campground & I like these better as they are usually more pristene, outdoors / forests/ rugged / primitive.... and better priced. Camp # 8 cost $7.50 a night... and we're 40' from the river.

The river is swollen and fast flowing... not good fishing today.... some rain today but really from the snowmelt runoff from 3'... yes that's 3 feet of snow Last Week! Yes this is the middle of June.

Rain off and on; we're on the edge of the squall line and in between showers/ drizzle there are breaks in the cloud layer & there are patches of blue sky and sun. Wind is 20+ gusts to 30+ ... We crossed the Continental Divide earlier in the day -- back 50 miles-- and we are right on the "edge / line" of the storm. I believe -- my theory-- it has to do w/ the Continenal divide... What it does for water... it also does for wind. ... and forms the erosion patterns of this unique canyon. This & Wind River mountains / canyon are the result.

Sun breaks on one side of canyon... Rainbow! Wow !!! more on the canyon tommorrow ie... different trees on different sides of the canyon. Steak & baked potato. A great day ! Thank you for this gift!
