Rock Springs to Firehole, Wy
Up hwy 530 and passed a couple of timy towns like Manilla w/ plan of staying overnight in Green River. At Green River... turns out this is a crossroads transportation point on I- 80 w/ a huge rail yard/ shipping / trucking terminals. Not a camp suited that we could find. ... after Flaming gorge... an interstate truck stop or camp in gravel was disapointing. Down 10 miles to Rock Springs, WY . More of the same town here. Some supplies.... rv park was behind oil refinery tanks & place smelled of petroleum fumes like a gas station. Work on I - 80 had traffic backed up for miles.
Look at maps / guides and made decision to drive-- backtrack 20 miles to Firehole. Actually not going back same route... just going south from Rock Springs-- on EAST side of Flaming Gorge / Green River reservoir-- hadn't seen this route / raod / Hwy US 191--- the same North/ South US hwy 191 coming out of Chinle, AZ to Moab, UT .
20 mile drive through the WY high plains.... absolutely gorgeous! And then got to Firehole. Double Wow !!! Firehole is a desert / high plains camp and this was sure a good decision to camp here. This is the North end / headwaters of Flaming Gorge-- just trout fished the last 2 days 40 mile south on this lake... now the North end is entirely different than the wooded mountains of the south end.
Several chiminey rock spires formations overlook the lake. Desert sagebrush.... smells sweet like the plains. Sunset is beautiful here. Camp fire and roasted / broiled trout. A great day.
