Flaming Gorge to Rock Springs, Wyoming 3rd post on this drive
Upper end of hwy 530
Leaving flaming Gorge by driving up the west side of the reservoir on hwy 530. Beautiful drive through the desolate high plains of Wyoming. Flaming gorge is the Green River & the dam backs up 40 miles of water resources this region needs to store.
Turned out to drive the Sheep Creek geological loop Wow!!! (see Sheep Creek Post) -- when completed
Passed through a couple of timy towns. At Green River... this is a crossroads transportation point on I- 80 w/ a huge rail yard. Not a camp suited to outdoors that we could find. Seemed like a place for interstate drivers to get off the road for a night before getting back on the interstate.... not my kind of spot after being in Flaming gorge a few days. Down 10 miles to Rock Springs, WY . More town here. Some supplies.... rv park was behind oil refinery tanks & place smelled of petroleum fumes like a gas station. Work on I - 80 had traffic backed up for miles.
Look at maps / guides and made decision to drive-- back track 20 miles to Firehole. Actually not going back on the same route... just going south from Rock Springs-- on EAST side of Flaming Gorge / Green River reservoir-- hadn't seen this route / raod / Hwy US 191--- the same North/ South US hwy 191 coming out of Chinle, AZ to Moab, UT .... this is a wonderful road to drive .
