Firehole UT to Sinks River Canyon Wyoming

ITW 40

Firehole camp Utah to Sinks Canyon- Lander, Wyoming

Thursday June 17 , 2010

These pics will begin north of I-80... Hwy 191 up to Farson, Wy then Hwy 28 to Lander, Wyoming. We took a side out to South Pass City and Atlantic City, Wyoming -- see those posts-- and separate post for To Lander, Red Canyon. Those enroute -sideouts- were to interesting so I journaled seperate posts... They're not ghost towns although the populations are very small; these were the jumping off places for the Oregon trail in thier heyday of the 1850s to 1870s.

42* in the am and headed up to Lander on US hwy 191... the same US hwy 191 we left out of Chinle, AZ -- Canyon de Chelly-- ... if you had to drive a scenic hwy of america, I'd choose US hwy 191 for the scenic beauty and history.

Onto the high plains... Ice cream at Farson mercantile... onto hwy 28 north, beautiful country... desolate... but beautiful. Crossed the Continental Divide 7,550' elev. Onto South Pass... This was an important place for the pioneers heading west.... a connection / change to pick up the Oregon trail here through the lowest pass on the continental divide to cross the Rockies.

The snowcapped moutains to the west /left are the southern edge of the Wind River mountain range. ... The Rockies
