East Helena, Montana

From Helena, Montana head out hwy 12east / 287e to Canyon Ferry. a few miles out is small town East Helena. Early pioneer history interesting. Those pioneers were of hearty stock. They have my respect!

The prarie homestead ... hewn timber home... was low height and low pitched roof because of the prarie winds. Just stumbling onto this home was a treat to see.

This journey across the continent was similar in ways to what the pioneers saw... stumbling / running onto unsuual / unique things that were not planned.

I used a compass on this journey; NOT a GPS that keeps you from thinking on your own. To me... a GPS trains you not to think on your own. ... to NOT trust your gut and your instincts, your biological spacial reference to the earth. It just points / tells you what to do / decides for you. It's just not that appealing to me to follow someone elses directions of where to go.

Pretty sure the wagon trains didn't have a GPS. ... but did use one a couple times.

*** The victorian home in Helena got in here by error.... but understand the contrast... wealthy elite victorian home in Helena once you'd struck it rich -- prarie timber home for the pioneers settling and making a homestead ranch after crossing the prarie to their promised land. ***
