Cuchara,CO

ITW 17

May

Cuchara, CO

San Isabel National forest

Spanish Peaks wilderness area

A stop for a bite to eat in a small town... Colorado outback

Driving from Tinidad, CO on hwy 12west is really spectacular scenic byway of southern Colorado.

At Stonewall, CO -- flatiron rock formations-- road turns due north and starts up the Cuchara valley / mountain range going through a gap in the Dakota Wall - a sandstone formation running from Mexico to Canada and nicknamed the "backbone of the Rockies."

Cucharas Pass 9,941' elev. cool mountain air.

The Spanish Conquistadors arrived in New Mexico in the 1500's. They noticed the mountain range west of the Peaks turned red at sunrise, and named them the "sangre de Cristo," or "blood of Christ."

Cuchara, CO is a popular summer resort town to enjoy the peace of the southern Colorado mountains.

Had a bite to eat at the famous local "Dog Bar", looks like a fun place to hang out and good food. Great fries & sauce!

The Cuchara river flows right through town.

Head out due north on hwy 12west,... will hit hwy 160west just past La Veta... and break out into the high plains.
